Animals of the Lowcountry

(Select Wednesdays from June 11 and 25, Jul 9 and 23, and August 6 and 20, 2008) A variety of lowcountry animals will be on display and you can learn about their habits during the "Animals from the Lowcountry" series at The Coastal Discovery Museum at Honey Horn. Scheduled to appear from Oatland Island Education Center are: barred owl, screech owl, alligator, corn snake, gopher tortoise, toad, opossum or legless lizard. Participants will have the opportunity to not only see these animals, but take photos of them as well!
Programs at 10:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. are scheduled for June 11 and 25, Jul 9 and 23, and August 6 and 20

Medicinal Plants

A presentation on the plants, trees, shrubs, flowers and roots grown mainly in the Lowcountry will be given by Dr. Jeanne Audet on July 23rd at 3 p.m. at the Coastal Discovery Museum at Honey Horn. A discussion will take place on how they were used as medicines by the Native Americans and those that still are used today in modern mainstream medicine. A brief history of the Native Americans in this area, and the pharmacopeia formed over the years and the role of the medicine man will be part of the presentation. 'Authors At the Albergotti'

Island visitors should include a visit to the historic town of Beaufort and include the inaugural “Authors At the Albergotti” on Thursday, July 24. The new Albergotti Grill at the Holiday Inn on Boundary Street is having an afternoon social from 3:00 -5:00 pm featuring New York Times bestselling author, Mary Alice Monroe whose just-off-the-press book Time Is A River was selected by USA Today and Book Sense as one of the best 2008 Summer Reads. Mary Alice will mingle with guests, give a talk about her books and sign books which will be available for sale at the social.
